Life Standing Still – Chapter 1, Page 1

Below is the second page to the story, or, well its more like a page and a half. Starting tomorrow, you’ll get only 1 page. Enjoy:

Chapter 1:

It’s been one month since dad’s death. Life seems to be moving so slowly for my family, if it’s moving at all. Mom gets out of bed and goes through the motions, but she’s not really there. My sister no longer talks. She cries at night, alone in bed, where mom can’t see her. The fog I’ve felt since that night has not lifted. I’m in a constant state of misery, watching the rest of my family fall apart at the passing of our patriarch. What’s worse, it’s as if Mother Nature knows my pain and wets the world with its tears every time my cheeks are wet with mine.

I feel as if we have all collapsed within ourselves, dealing with our pain alone; instead of relying on each other to heal. I want to help my mom and sister. I want them to be whole again, but every thought I have to help seems to fade away and fall apart. Nothing seems to be enough for them; nothing short of dad coming back and things being exactly the same.

Mom takes Maisie to school every morning and picks her up every afternoon and still takes her to all of her extracurricular activities, ignoring Maisie’s silent protests. Mom is, again, going through the motions of what was our normal life; although nothing is moving forward with her. In three months I’ll be sixteen and will be getting my driver’s license, gaining some freedom and able to assist mom with the driving; but I still have three months and Mother Nature seems so focused on how I feel, she sorts the weather accordingly.  I have cursed her and all her minions since his passing, as it has rained nonstop and I still have to walk to school every day.

Showing up to school day in and day out, dripping water from head to toe, despite the new rain clothes mom has purchased for me, is a nuisance. I have taken to wearing sweats and a sweatshirt for the walk and bringing real clothes to change into after I get there. Since I have P.E. first period, it’s really convenient for me but showing up wet is still not fun. It just accentuates the awkward student I have become. Once popular, I am now the outcast. I alienated my friends in my grief and they eventually all just gave up on me. One month, and they’re all gone, all except for Micka. She does her best every day to make me smile; and covers for me every morning that I’m late for school.

My school was built in the early nineteen-hundreds. There are old, black-iron gates at the front, which stand at least twenty feet tall. Think the entrance to a haunted house from your typical horror movie. As I approached the entrance, on time for once, thunder boomed over my head. I looked up, only to have rain water drip into my eyes and onto my face from my oversized hood. I sent a curse up to the heavens, then quickly apologized, feeling guilty for doing so.

I pleaded with God instead. “Please just let the rain stop for once, let today be a better day for me.”

I proceeded through the gates and immediately jumped out of my skin as Micka threw her arm over my shoulder from behind, screaming a salutation into my ear that was lost to the continuing thunder.

“What?” I shouted, turning my head towards her. She had her dark hair under a scarf that was tied at her neck. She had a closed umbrella in her hand, but she definitely needed it as you could clearly see water dripping from the tip of her nose. She was laughing as usual. Her smooth milk chocolate skin a dark contrast to her perfectly white smile. Her clothes were immaculate; as usual, bright and bold and beautiful, just like her personality.  All that was missing from her fifties Hollywood style were the giant sunglasses. Unfortunately it wasn’t bright enough for those today.

“I said, hello there bestie. How are you feeling today? Are you not loving this weather” She shouted at me as she danced a circle in front of me in a puddle, splashing water up her legs and onto mine. I smiled at her, half-heartedly and continued walking into the building. I personally wanted to see the sun again.  She caught up and linked her arm into mine.

“You’re crazy, do you know that? But I am thankful for it.” I gave her a side hug as we headed towards the locker room.

“You used to be too. We need to work on getting the old you back. I say we start with the dance coming next month; you absolutely have to go to junior prom Rose. And I know you think you’re all weird and awkward now, but it’s not true, and I notice many boys taking interest.” She took her scarf off, shaking her head, flinging the beads of water from her short afro-style hair into my face.

I opened the locker-room door, turning towards her. “Thanks, as if I didn’t get a good enough shower from the walk here.” She laughed at me. “I’ll consider the dance, just not totally sure I’m up for it yet.” What I wanted was to find a way to make mom and Maisie better. If I could heal them, I’m sure I’d heal myself in the process.

Micka tossed a hand in the air, waiving me off as she pranced into the locker room to change. I smiled, genuinely, because I knew she’d find a way to talk me into going, and I’d go no matter how begrudgingly. ///

Life: Standing Still Forward

As I have stated on my Facebook fan page, I will be posting one page of my new story, (unedited and currently in the works), daily to my website. I will share the link to this site on my fan page so it is easy to find, however you’re welcome to check back here daily for the new page. When the story is complete, I will go back, edit it and publish it for print/e-book. I will also do my best to not have much errors and it will likely be more content that is edited. 🙂

Below is the beginning. The forward.

Forward:

The hardest part about death is that life moves on. There isn’t a single person in this world life will stand still for. That’s the funny, ironic thing though. As life moves on for the rest of the world, it has stopped for the people who care most deeply for the deceased. What, though, happens to the person who has died? Does their life stop? Or does it continue on into another life, a parallel universe perhaps? Or do they become angels for God, or lesser demons for the Devil? Maybe they just simply float above us, looking down watching the world go on around them. This thought has crossed my mind a lot in the last year and a half. Death has always followed my thoughts, but I thought nothing of it. I watched a lot of news for a thirteen year old kid, and boy, death is everywhere. Little did I know how close it was going to hit.

January 2, 2015 was the beginning of the worst year ever. Being woken up in the middle of the night to your mom yelling at you father to wake up is heart-wrenching. It wasn’t the normal, “wake up” I heard in the mornings. It was panic. I remember the exact time, 3:58 a.m. The time is ingrained in my memory forever because the noise I heard coming from my father, from my room down the hall, over my mother’s panic, was something I can’t even describe sufficiently; gurgling and wheezing mixed together with a struggle to hold onto life, without knowing it is slipping away is the best way I can think of.

In a frightened haze I leaped out of bed and ran to my parent’s room. My mom had just switched the light on and I saw my dad, lying on his side, tongue hanging out, body shaking, turning blue. In an unusually calm manner, I walked to dad and turned him to his back. “Dad. Dad!” I turned to my mom, who was so distressed, crying, praying to God to save him. “Mom, we need to call 911.” I went to check on my little sister, grabbing my cell phone on the way to call 911. She was awake, and scared, and I told her things would be okay.

I dialed 911 and it was busy. I tried again, still busy. I screamed at my phone, walking back into my mom’s room. My heart was racing; I had sweaty palms, and I started to get dizzy. “Here, talk to the operator.” My mom shoved a phone into my face and went back to my dad. At this time there was no more sound coming from him and he was still. I looked up to heaven and in a defeated tone begged Jesus to save my daddy. I couldn’t lose my daddy; our family wouldn’t survive without him. Deep down I knew I had already lost him.

The operator gave us instructions to do CPR. I helped mom take him off the bed and followed the directions of the lady on the phone. Air left my dad’s mouth after a moment and hope came back to me. And then it left. He was still blue, still unresponsive. I was focused on saving him though. I prayed non-stop, small fruitless chants under my breath, “please don’t take my daddy; please, please don’t take him from us.” I was pulled aside by a paramedic, quickly picked up and set down behind them as they took over, trying everything in their power to save his life.

I stood in the background, at the opening of my parent’s bedroom door, blocking my mom from the view, hoping my sister would stay in her room and wait for me to get her.

It amazes me to this day the extreme clarity that I remember everything that happened. The details are clear and everything is etched into my memory so clearly, it’s as if I relive it every day. Nothing happened like the movies. Nothing was as I’ve heard it described. It wasn’t in slow motion, the memory isn’t a blur. It happened in real time, and what happened can be pulled with extreme detail to the forefront of my mind at any moment. In one breath our entire family was ripped apart by an underlying heart issue that showed no symptoms. One minute my father was healthy and happy, laughing alongside my mom like high school sweethearts and the next he was gone; and the only people who seemed to notice were the ones who’s world stopped that morning; ours. Life kept going as if it didn’t happen; as if he didn’t matter. He was nothing in this gigantic world. Sure, he touched so many in life; and many in death, but every one’s life continued. Our life stood still, motionless and nobody else on the planet seemed to care, let alone notice.

Pill Hill – Review

3Drender_pillhill

I’m going to start this review off by saying this: I received an unedited copy of this book to beta. Within a week of getting the story, life happened. Very unexpected things that had to come first and unfortunately I could no longer beta. I couldn’t get back to this book until just a little bit ago, although I tried many times to start and finish it.

That being said, I have read books that are poorly edited. So reading an unedited book I thought would be challenging. NOT THIS BOOK. I couldn’t put it down once I got through the first chapter (that is where I kept stopping when I’d get back to it).

Mason is a young man who agrees to partake in an experiment at a once closed down mental facility. Nobody in the group is afflicted with the same thing, but in a way, they are all some what alike. At least that’s what I got. I don’t want to go much more into it than that as I feel that you need to experience this story yourself.

The story was a roller coaster ride of emotions that caught me up at every turn. The qualities of the characters are almost hard to not relate to, even though they’re all patients in a mental facility.

The writing was superb, the characters were built up very well and the story flowed flawlessly. It was so good that I can’t even wait to read the short story Mr. Dull wrote based off of one of the characters in the book.

I give this book 5 stars and cannot wait to read what Bryan Dull writes next.

Author’s Spotlight 5/24/15

Author’s Spotlight – Author Bryan Dull

Tell me a little about yourself.

Well. Let’s see. I live in Indiana right now with my wife and daughter. I recently graduated college with a Bachelors in Business. I also write for the High Score Reviews website where I do articles and reviews of film, television and games.

When did you start writing? Is it something you’ve wanted to do since you were a kid, or did you start because a story came to you that you needed to get out?

When I was around 13 I was grounded for a couple weeks where my room was just a loft in the upstairs of my dad’s house in Florida. While I was sweating to death and nobody was allowed to touch the thermostat, I found an old typewriter and started going to town on a story.

How many books have you written, what are their titles, where can we find them?

I have ‘Pill Hill’ that is coming out in June. I also have my Solstice Chronicle novels, ‘Solstice’ and ‘Equinox’, we well as my shorts, “Daddy” (a prequel to Pill Hill), “Christians Christmas Conundrum”, and “Sewer Drains & Lighthouses”.  All are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble as well as other outlets.

What genre do you write in? If multiple genres, which is your favorite to write in and why?

I started off writing horror just because that genre is what inspired me to write. ‘Solstice’ and ‘Equinox’ were horror/psychological horror, but I thought that I needed to expand a little, so I wrote Pill Hill as drama with little hints of the psychological, especially in one chapter.

I don’t really have a favorite yet just because I have liked the ones I have done so far.

Who or what is your inspiration to write?

Stephen King. I obsessed with the movies when I was a kid to the point where my first novel was ‘Pet Semetary’ (my parents didn’t know any better. I was nine) He proved that you don’t have to be pigeonholed to one genre which is something I am fighting with right now.

Which authors do you look up to?

Stephen King, Clive Barker, Ernest Cline, Neil Gaiman, and Chuck Palahniuk.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a career, or even just a hobby, in writing?

Write because you want to. Don’t do it for the fame, or the possible money. When people do this, they tend to become disappointed in the long run. It is hard to make a name for yourself and is even harder to get published with huge publishing houses. Start small and start a blog, write for smaller publications if you can.

What are you working on now?

Jeez. What am I not working on is the question. I know some want a new “Solstice” book so I am actively thinking about that. I am half way done with the first part of a short story series dealing with angels. The next, big thing I am thinking about is a novel that has the working title of ‘Author’.

What is your favorite book and why?

‘The Thief of Always’ by Clive Barker. I like it because it’s a constant reminder that the best things in life come in small doses and people do not have to have everything all the time. Then you have nothing to look forward to in life.

Are you reading anything now?

I just started ‘Damned’ by Chuck Palahniuk

Of the characters you’ve written so far, which one is your favorite and why?

Mason from ‘Pill Hill’, he was the easiest to write because he is me in a lot of cases. Some of the events in the story are true while some are exaggerated a bit.
